PARK WATCH WORKSHOP AND ORIENTATION TONIGHT

Hi Neighbors:

TONIGHT, Aug. 26, at Willye White Rec Center, from 7-8pm, there will be a PARK WATCH orientation from Mayra Gomez, who does this sort of thing for 2 police districts, 24 and 20. So she knows her stuff.

This will operate similar to a BLOCK WATCH, only the focus will be our three parks North of Howard. We will be registered as an official entity with the Chicago Police Department, and when we call for assistance, we are better equipped to know what/how to talk to 911 and get police action. You will also learn more about the city ordinances that cover the regulations and use of the city parks & playlots and the responsibilities of the police (since 1958), and the Park District. BE INFORMED and INVOLVED.

In addition, I know some of you may have novel ways of getting cooperation from the youth in our neighborhood and building a raporie with them which will go a long way to making our neighborhood and it's parks and the playlot safe and enjoyable places to be.

The goal is to get at least 2-3 dozen people involved in PARK WATCH, so that no one person or group has to carry the burden alone. AND it can be fun. It CAN be a good way for you to take that first step in getting involved in the community and taking responsibility to help it develop and grow to be an REAL community, not just a community where groups live side by side, but never interact with each other.

Thank you,
Sr. Cecilia Fandel,Chairperson

GARAGE FIRE NOH-UPDATE-THE DAY AFTER....

(click photos to enlarge)

As you can see, the garage is empty except for the spring remains of a burned mattress. There is no power or any utility in the garages that could have caused the fire. IMO, this is the work of either 'squatters' using the garage as a place to....? or arsonists/vandals.  The Fire Department said the fire started on/in the mattress.  If the garage had been properly secured this never would have happened. IMO, the property owner/bank should be 'cited' for not having secured the property.

BREAKING NEWS-GARAGE FIRE NOH

(click photos to enlarge)

The garage at the rear of 7714 N. Marshfield caught (was set?) on fire tonight at about 10:00 p.m.. The property is apparently vacant  having been foreclosed on several years ago.  A number of us in the neighborhood have been trying to get the City and/or the Alderman to take action and get the garage secured to no avail.  It's been wide open for months and this was bound to happen.  We should be thankful that the damage was confined to the one stall.  Our thanks  to the men and women of our Fire Department for a job well done!

MUST READ

To the community:
We need your help.

We all want our playgrounds and parks to be a safe place for children and adults. Wishing for it won’t make it happen.

There has been ongoing disregard for play equipment, property, and other rules of Harold Washington Playground. Many times there are no adults supervising. Sometimes there are adults there, but they allow their children to disregard the rules posted. Some adults are there but do not get actively involved in reminding children of the rules or their behavior. Police have had to be called to restore order.

The Parks advisory councils and safety committee asked for a meeting with the Park District and Police which took place on July 30.

The Park District and Police strongly advised that there be active neighborhood involvement in watching the playground/parks. The Police said they would back us up with appropriate action, including arrests, or other process if it involves a minor. The Park District said it would levy fines and press for restitution of property damages.

But the community must do its part by organizing a strong Neighborhood group to be Park Watchers, especially from 5pm – closing time.

Tomorrow, Tuesday night: National Night Out Look for the table next to the CAPS table in Willye White Park. Please stop by and sign up to be a Park Watcher. Thank you.

FROM BEAT 2422

Greetings Neighbors and Friends,

Come out and join Beat 2422 as we walk this Saturday, April 18th at 7:00. The weatherman says the temperatures are expected to be in the mid 60's. Great weather for a spring walk through the North of Howard area. Engage in pleasant conversation, get to know your neighbors and enjoy the warmer weather. Bring pen and paper so that we can take note of troubled and abandoned buildings, street lights that are out, sewers that are backed up, trees that need trimming and other city services that need to be reported.
We will try to cover the area from Triangle Park to the west down to the lakefront on Eastlake Terrace.

We will meet at the Willye White Community Recreation Center at 1610 W. Howard, head west to Paulina then north to Jonquil, west again to Hermitage, hang out a few minutes at Triangle Park to see what's happening, then continue down Juneway back to Paulina, south on Paulina back to Jonquil, turn east on Jonquil to Bosworth, south on Bosworth back to Howard, do a bit of positive loitering at Howard and Bosworth and depending on the time either head back to where we started or we can continue east on Howard to Eastlake Terrace, north on Eastlake Terrace to the edge of the city at Sheridan Rd, take Sheridan Road to Juneway, Juneway west to Ashland, Ashland north through Willye White Park back to where we began at Howard and Ashland.

If that sounds like a confusing route, well, it is open to change as we go along if we don't think we can cover the entire area. I'm trying to cover as much territory as possible while touching trouble spots as we go, which may not be possible in one walk.

Bring your four legged friends, your buggies, babies and little ones. All ages are welcome, if you have someone in a wheelchair bring them too or a new friend. Everyone can use some fresh air and company besides the tv or computer.

Hope to see you out there.
