Police Dislodge Howard Street Drug Market; Community Meeting with Commander

Dear Neighbor,
I'm pleased to report the Chicago Police Department last week concluded an undercover investigation that resulted in the arrests of seventeen known gang members and their associates. Arrest warrants have been obtained for four other offenders that remain at large.
Dubbed "Operation Last Stop," the investigation disrupted a $1.6 million-dollar-a-year gang-controlled drug enterprise. The investigation targeted members of the Gangster Disciples street gang. Though the illegal drug activity was centered on and around Howard Street and Gale Community Academy, the gang was involved in a conflict over territory, which has resulted in several shootings throughout the East Rogers Park neighborhood in the last several months.
The investigation involved dozens of narcotics purchases by undercover officers from known gang members and their associates. These narcotics transactions all occurred within 1,000 feet of school property in the area, which will enable authorities to increase the charges and ultimately the time of incarceration.
During the course of the operation, police seized quantities of cash, crack cocaine, one vehicle, and two handguns, one of which was used in an attempted armed robbery of an undercover officer conducting the investigation.

I will hold a COMMUNITY MEETING with 24th District Police Commander James Roussell on Tuesday, December 20, 7 p.m., at Gale Community Academy, 1631 W. Jonquil (between Ashland and Marshfield).

Commander Roussell will provide up-to-date information on the status of the investigation and respond to your questions. He will enlist the support of community residents so that together we can take proactive steps to prevent the illegal drug trade from re-establishing itself on Howard Street and elsewhere in the neighborhood.
I know these long investigations can often seem frustrating to community residents who see crimes occurring but don't always see arrests being made. But I also know that these longer investigations are more likely to result in convictions that get gang members off our streets for good. I encourage you to attend the meeting next week so you can find out what you can do to work with the police and your local CAPS Beat organization to build on the success of this undercover investigation and make our neighborhood safer.

BEAT 2422 CAPS MEETING TODAY........

Meet the new 'Acting' Commander of the 24th District, James Roussell, at this month's Beat 2422, CAPS meeting, today at the Willye White Park Recreation Center, 1610 W. Howard at 5 PM. 

We are urging residents of Beat 2422, who are able, to attend this meeting and express your concerns and feelings about current and future issues regarding policing services, response and patrolling in Beat 2422,  particularly in our North of Howard neighborhood.

AND SO 'IT' GOES.......

On April 1st, Bill Morton posted 5 photos of the vacant lot at the corner of Howard and Ashland Avenue on his blog (http://rp1000.blogspot.com/2011/04/walk-down-howard-street.html) showing the horrible conditions that have been allowed to 'fester' for the past several years at this community eyesore!  Today, I documented the property's condition 29 days later,  taking the following pictures:

This situation begs the question, "Where is Alderman Moore's 'oversight and control' of the conditions at this property?"  Not only is this an unacceptable eyesore but the fencing is open at several locations, creating serious safety and hazardous conditions (in violation of several City of Chicago ordinances and laws).  I urge all residents of Rogers Park to call the Alderman's office (773-338-5796) and or to email him at  ward49@cityofchicago.org  to complain strongly and loudly about this inexcusable situation and demand that he take immediate action to get this site properly secured and screened once and for all and to see that the owner keeps it that way!  The residents of this neighborhood have more than enough 'issues' to contend with and allowing this kind of negative eyesore and hazard to exist is outrageous!

REPOST---TIME FOR REAL CHANGE.......

After reading Alderman Moore's 'statement' regarding his decision on the proposed "RIF" for Rogers Park (49th Ward) and the response of Brian White, his opponent  in the upcoming Alderman's race and a proponent of the RIF,  it is more apparent than ever that we need a change in the Aldermanic leadership in the 49th Ward.  After 20 years in office, Joe Moore's divisive tactics regarding the important issues facing our community couldn't be clearer.  He continues his 'helter-skelter',  hit and miss (mostly miss) form of community planning and development, without any effort toward, and or involving, long-range, professional planning for our neighborhoods.  I find it telling and sadly disingenuous that in his rebuke of the the RIF proposal, he continually refers to 'low-income' housing.   In fact, Mr. Moore is directly responsible for the devastation and unhealthy concentration of very low-income rental housing and poverty in the North of Howard neighborhood as well as other pockets throughout the Ward.  While there may be legitimate questions regarding Mr. White's proposal, it is clear that he is a serious community development planner, who is interested in full community input and long range planning, resulting in quality of life improvement for all, including affordable rental housing and true mixed income development in the 49th Ward. 

I urge everyone to support Brian White in his run for Alderman of the 49th Ward.  After 20 years of Mr. Moore's brand of 'leadership?' it is  more apparent than ever that we need real change to come to the 49th Ward and its'  56,000 residents.

I hope neither one of these cars belong to 'you'! 

Members of this 'group' have been setting off serious explosives (M80's) IN THE PLAYLOT for the past 30 minuets.  Calls to 911 are ignored.  On my last call to 911,  I pointed out to the dispatcher the real danger of someone being seriously injured by this illegal activity.  Her reply, "If that happens then we'll send an ambulance."  So much for "We serve and protect"! 

And so it goes North of Howard!
