NEWS FROM THE WILLYE B. WHITE RECREATION CENTER: FRIDAY NIGHT HOOPS

Willye B. White Park

Youth between ages 13-15 are participating in 'Inner City Hoops' basketball tournaments every Friday at the Willye B. White Park Community Center. The first event was Friday, March 12th and will be held every Friday, with the last event being April 23rd. The event begins at 5:00 pm and lasts until approximately 7:30 pm.

Throughout the duration of the 'Inner City Hoops' tournament, the Park Advisory Council will be operating a concession stand, selling hot dogs, chips, cookies, bottled water to raise funds.  All proceeds will go to help fund after school programs and summer camp for underprivileged children.  Stop in, catch a tournament, and enjoy a hot dog or just donate to the kids fund.

Through it's fund raising efforts the Council offered 80% discount stocking stuffers for the Winter Holiday so kids could attend park activities while on break.  The 80% discount was carried into the winter Park District program session and will continue with the spring program session.  Program sessions are 10 weeks and the Spring 2010 session runs from March 29th  thru June 6th.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Please pass the following email/information on to your friends and neighbors:

Eva and Toni,

Tomorrow (Wednesday, October 7) is National Walk and Roll to School Day. It’s a national day to celebrate fitness and encourage students to walk/bike/roll to school rather than drive.

In schools across the country activities and fests are held to celebrate.

The exciting news is that the Mayor’s Fitness Council, a group I am on, selected gale School as one of the two schools for this year. What this means is we will be at Gale from 7:45-8:45 helping to lead fitness stations with the students. The principal and community leaders will briefly speak and then they will lead the school in a morning stretch followed by an energized walk around the school./park.

Girls in the Game agreed to help lead, as we are trying to connect the girls at gale with Willye White Park. What we still need are 4-5 volunteers who can come help us with activities – for the boys and girls.
Anyone you can pass this too – I’d be most appreciative! I know people are busy – but we just need 1 HOUR of their time!!

They can email me or call me at the office 312.633.4263.

FROM BEAT 2422 FACILITATOR EVA MCCANN

Greetings All,

You Talk it, now let's walk it. You come to the beat meetings and have something to say. Now let's prove that what you say is worth doing something about.

Join us as we walk on Saturday, June 13, through the North of Howard area. If you know of trouble spots, point them out, hang out so they don't hang out. Even if only for a little while. Make them uncomfortable, knowing they are being watched. If we are there, they won't be.

Get to know your neighbors, the police, the neighborhood. Engage in pleasant conversation, observe interesting architecture, identify areas that need city services, help get them reported to 311. Enjoy the weather, being outdoors and getting some exercise. All are welcome, including wheelchairs, strollers, young ones, old ones, 4 legged ones.

We meet at 7:00 p.m. in front of Willye B. White Recreation Center, 1610 W. Howard.

We look forward to seeing you,

Eva McCann
